IBMS 2001 Conference in Madrid, Spain to Have Four XLH Papers

INTERNATIONAL BONE & MINERAL SOCIETY Madrid, Spain [June 4-8, 2001] Four abstracts relating to XLH are being presented at the IBMS conference in Madrid Spain.

These four abstracts concern the expression of PHEX in tissue cultures of human lung cells, the treatment of OHO tumours which secrete a phosphate leakage factor, the identification of XLH in a population of black South Africans, and finally Anne Nelson's laboratory's description of a phosphate uptake inhibitory factor from OHO cells.

XLH is also known as X-Linked Hypophosphatemia (sometimes also spelled as hypophosphataemia), X-Linked Hypophosphatemic Rickets, Familial Hypophosphatemia, Vitamin D-Resistant Rickets (VDRR) Rickets and even Genetic Rickets. Its notable characteristics are bowed legs, short stature, poor teeth formation causing spotaneous dental abscesses, and low blood phosphorus levels.
